PREPARING FOR YOUR Snapchat headshot

A photograph always tells a story. In the case of a headshot, it tells your professional brand story.

Preparing for a headshot session often comes with a little bit of hesitation for most people. Some of us are camera shy or believe we’re not photogenic. Others have had a negative photo experience in the past or simply do not feel ready or up to the task. Even those individuals who don’t mind being photographed get a little nervous. Many questions arise. “How should I present myself? What do I wear? Do I need special make-up? Should I get my hair cut or styled?”

We believe the right preparation can make a significant difference. At Dwayne Brown Studio our task is to, not only photograph you, but to guide you through the process, helping you feel at ease and ultimately to capture you in a professional, authentic way.

Suggestions for preparing for your headshot portrait

Before the session

  1. Try to bring a positive, calm mindset to the shoot. If you are relaxed, it will show in the photo.

  2. Feeling rested and getting a good night's sleep is ideal. Try to stay hydrated and to drink water prior to the shoot.

Clothing

  1. First impressions are important. Ask yourself who your audience is and how you would like to be regarded. Try to create a good visual first impression.

  2. Choose a clothing style that you are comfortable with and that suits you. If you are not sure what to wear, a shirt/blouse/t-shirt and jacket combination in solid tones (black/gray) always works well.

  3. As this is a headshot, what is worn from the waist up is critical. Jackets, shirts, t-shirts, blouses, sweaters and dresses that are well tailored and fit well matter greatly. These items should look professional. Avoid items that are too tight or fit too loosely, as well as frayed and worn out collars and necklines.

  4. We strongly recommend wearing top clothes that are wrinkle and lint free.

  5. Wearing a suit jacket in a darker tone allows the face to be the focal point. If your style is more creative or casual then a lighter or brightly colored jacket, shirt or blouse is also a good alternative.

  6. If wearing a tie, we will finesse the knot, making sure it is well positioned and centered. If it is not part of the outfit, sometimes a jacket will be suggested. White shirts are not recommended unless they are worn with a jacket or a tie.

  7. Color and patterns can help express style and personality as long as these are not too busy and do not divert attention from the face. Try to avoid all-white blouses and shirts.

  8. Try to avoid a clothing style that overwhelms or dates your portrait or that is too seasonal (ex. short sleeves, heavy scarves).

  9. Accessories (necklaces, earrings etc.) are a good option when these complement the look and don't distract from the portrait. Very long necklaces are not recommended, as they may interfere with the crop of the headshot. Please feel free to bring along extra accessories so that we may discuss options with you.

  10. If you wear glasses, we will incorporate them. However, if they are an accessory, bring them to the photoshoot as an option so that we may decide on the best look.

  11. Choose a hairstyle that has worked in the past. Simple and classic is always best.

  12. Too much makeup can interfere with lighting. Try to avoid dramatic colors and shimmery face products.

The process

  1. Even if a session is short, please let us know if there is anything in particular that you are concerned with. We want you to feel comfortable.

  2. Don’t worry about how to pose or whether to smile or not. We will guide you.

  3. We will ask you to sit/stand in a relaxed way. If you feel at ease, it will show on your expression.

  4. We want to include you and will give you a peek at the photos during the session.

  5. Don’t hesitate to stand or sit tall. It will make a difference!

  6. Do not forget to relax and smile!
